The Morača Mountains are located in the central part of Montenegro and represent the continuation of the Lola Ridge. They got their name from the river Morača. In the east and northeast, they end with the valley of the Morača river, in the west with the canyon of the Mrtvica river, and to the south of them is the sharp ridge of Maganika. The highest peak is Lastva 2226m.
Ask anyone to name a canyon in Montenegro and mostly people will mention Tara canyon. However, the story with stunning canyons in this small country blessed with amazing nature doesn't stop here. Mrtvica River Canyon is a hidden gem in Montenegro, located in the central part of the country. It is a tributary of the Morača River, and flows into it at the village of Međuriječje. The canyon is about 9 kilometers long, and its walls rise up to 700 meters high.
The most beautiful thing of the Mrtvica canyon it’s the best hike able of all of Montenegro's canyons, because of its length and location. So it’s gorgeous nature can be nicely absorbed by strolling through the heart of it. That’s the most fascinating element of visiting the Mrtvica canyon, the trail is really the only path through it with no other human interference in the distant area.
Departure from Belgrade at 8AM.
Car transport route: Belgrade - Nova Varoš - Pljevlja - Žabljak - Šavnik - Nikšić. Casual breaks. Arrival by evening. Accommodation in a local homestay, dinner & overnight stay.
Other alternative is we pick you up from Podgorica. Podgorica-Nikšić is about 1h drive.
DAY 2 - CIRCULAR ROUTE, MULTI PEAKS
Departure in front of the accommodation at 07:00. A 1.5h drive to Captain's Lake (1679m) where we start our hike.
Planned daily hiking circular route: KAPETANOVO JEZERO -CAPTAIN'S LAKE (1679m) – STOŽAC (2141m) – SUVI VRH (2058m) – KRSTAC (1908m) – MORAČKI DOLOVI (1874m) - LASTVA (2226m) – NIKOLIN VRH (1984m) – CAPTAIN'S LAKE(1679m).
This is a beautiful hike, where you will experience mesmerizing vistas, open landscapes and grandeur of the Dinaric mountain system, which Moraca mountains are part of.
After a whole day of hiking, a joint local dinner in a mountain house by the lake. Accommodation and overnight stay in mountain cabins.
Statistics of the day: Expected total ascent: ~ 900 m/sl, route length: ~ 18 km, Duration: 09:30 h.
Fitness requirement: medium. 7/10. Technical difficulty: easy. 4/10. Water sources on the trail: 2 (the first at the start, and the second on the halfway point of the route).
DAY 3 - MRTVICA RIVER CANYON
Departure at 06:00 with small backpacks. Descent over Milina dol to Velja Duboki (880m). After a long break, entering the canyon of Mrtvica river.
During the passage of the canyon, there are longer breaks: when crossing from the right, to the left side of the river, near Aphrodite's tub, Nera's river springs, the Gate of Desires, and as needed. After exiting the canyon, we hike to Međurječje (211m), where the vehicle is waiting for us.
Statistics of the day: Expected total ascent: ~ 250 m/asl, Descent: 1650 m, Route length: ~ 26 km, Duration: 08:30 h with breaks. Fitness requirement: medium. Technical difficulty: easy, Source of drinking water: 3 + (at the start, Milin do, Velje duboko, Mrtvica river).
Planned departure until 4:00 p.m., and arrival in Belgrade until 12:00 p.m
Other alternative: drop off in Podgorica (1-1.5h drive)
